You are what you eat. Show me the 5 people you spend the most time with and I will show you your future. Maybe you’ve heard these sayings or others like them. The basic concept is that whatever you spend the most time on, or the most time with, will have the greatest influence on you. This is especially true of your success. Whether that success is in your work, in saving money, in weight loss (or getting healthy in general), it doesn’t matter. Whatever you give your focus to, becomes your reality. When we stop and think about that, it can be a truly sobering thought.
Is your focus helping your success?
Take a few minutes and think about how you spend your time. Who do you spend it with? What do you do? Is your circle of friends (and family) a support group or are they crabs in the bucket? Do you spend a large part of your time chatting and browsing Facebook or do you invest time in yourself with classes, books, and other enriching experiences?
This doesn’t mean you can’t have fun, waste time, or just be lazy (sometimes). It means that at the end of the day, you spend more time moving forward than you did doing other activities. As you dig into this, you will find areas that you know need improvement. Its up to you to decide what to do in these areas. How important are your own goals to you? You may find that there are some very helpful and supportive people in your group that really do help you to succeed (like an exercise partner). Or you may find that there are those that sabotage your success (even family members). Only you know. One thing is for sure though, if you take the time to do this exercise, you will absolutely find ways to improve your life and help move you towards your own success.
We have created a worksheet that will make this even easier for you. You can download it to help you figure out where your time is being used and if that is helping you to achieve you goals. You can download it here.
